Who We Are:

The Heartland Gatekeeper is a monthly non-denominational, non-profit Christian newspaper published for the Omaha, Nebraska/Council Bluffs, Iowa metropolitan area. Our targeted readers are both Christians and those who have not yet made a commitment to Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.

Our Mission Statement:

The Heartland Gatekeeper exists…
…to promote unity in the Body of Christ by serving as a source of communication, information, and networking.
…to encourage spiritual growth through ministry opportunities.
…to testify to the goodness of God through reporting from a Christian perspective.
…to reach those have yet to know Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior.

Our Needs:

  • News Stories: News and information about churches, upcoming events,
people and general items of interest to the Christian community at large.

Length: 150-300 words (news shorts), 300-700 words (news articles)

  • Feature Articles: Human interest articles; profiles of prominent Christians in fields such as sports or entertainment; articles on issues affecting the
community; highlights of Christian businesses, ministries, schools, or
    organizations; lifestyle articles.

Length: 500-1000 words (preferred length: 700-800 words)

  • Essays: Our greatest need is for informative articles that connect readers to the community. Therefore, while we will review essays, the number of essays accepted for publication will be minimal. Essays should pertain to issues that affect the Christian community.

    Length: 300-500 words

  • Poetry: We do not publish poetry at this time.

NOTE: All submissions should be written from a Christian perspective. We will give the highest priority to submissions with a local slant.

Our Writers:

  • We are seeking writers that have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and are growing in their faith.
  • Writers should have strong research and writing skills. We are looking
for crisp, clear writing that is spiritually impacting.
  • The best writers are those who are professional and submit only polished work.

How to Submit:

You can improve your chances for being published by asking yourself the
following questions before submitting your article:

  • Have I read one or more back issues of The Heartland Gatekeeper to better understand their editorial needs?
  • Does my article fit one of the categories listed under "Our Needs"?
  • Is my article written from a Christian perspective? Does it have a local slant?
  • Does my article draw the readers into a deeper relationship with Jesus and inspire Christians to more strongly live out their faith in their daily lives? Does it show the readers ways to connect faith and life?
  • Do I avoid preaching to the readers? Do I let the story carry the message?
  • Am I sensitive to unchurched readers who may not understand church terminology or structure?
  • Have I presented the material accurately? Have I verified the accuracy of facts and quotes and acknowledged my sources? Have I distinguished between facts and opinion? Have I used primary research whenever possible?
  • Have I treated my sources with integrity and respect?
  • Have I checked my manuscript for punctuation, spelling and grammatical errors?
  • Is my work readable? Does it flow smoothly?
  • Am I turning in polished work that reflects my best efforts?
  • Is my submission my own, original work?

When you have written your best work possible, contact us at (402) 926-2633 or through our web submission form for further details.

We will contact writers only if their submission has been accepted for
publication.
While we ask for only one time rights or reprint, we do request that authors provide us with the publication history of previously published works.
We reserve the right to edit manuscripts prior to publication.

THE HALF-BRIDGE

Not far from where I was born there is a “half-bridge.” It spans the Ohio-Indiana state line. One half of the bridge is in Ohio and the other half is in Indiana.

I have known many people who live “half-way” lives. Whatever they do is “half-hearted” because they only make “half-way” commitments and their lives are only “half-way” successful. To achieve anything worthwhile in life requires whole-hearted commitment.
